Synyster Gates: Shaping the Sound of a Generation

Brian Haner Jr., also known by his stage name Synyster Gates or Syn, joined one of the most iconic metalcore bands from Huntington Beach, California: Avenged Sevenfold (A7X).

In 2001, Gates received a call from his best friend, the late Jimmy Sullivan, better known as The Rev, who was the band’s drummer. At the time, Gates was studying jazz guitar at the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, planning to open a jazz studio one day. He accepted Jimmy’s offer, a decision that helped define both his career and A7X’s sound.

Gates picked up the guitar at just six years old, starting with simple chords. By nine, he was already learning songs like “Black Dog” by Led Zeppelin. His biggest role model was his father, Brian Haner Sr., known as “Guitar Guy” or “Papa Gates.” He is a talented musician, American comedian, and author.

Gates played an Ibanez in his younger years. His mom once bought him a Parker Fly, which stirred controversy in the hardcore music scene because many dismissed it as a “plastic guitar”—a rebellious move that stood out in its own way. In A7X’s Unholy Confessions video, Synyster played a Les Paul. At the time, he was hoping for a sponsorship deal, but when the company insisted he purchase the guitar outright, he refused. He kept the guitar, and because of that, the deal never happened. Of course, today he has his own signature Schecter line.

Synyster’s influences are as diverse as his playing style. He cites Slash, Dimebag Darrell, Jimi Hendrix, George Harrison, and Steve Vai as inspirations. His time studying jazz fusion, particularly the work of Allan Holdsworth and Frank Gambale, shaped his technique and discipline. Gates also developed a love for gypsy jazz,  and at age 30, he picked up a gypsy guitar, practicing daily to master its sound. Many of these influences can be heard woven into his own distinctive style.

Beyond the stage, Gates and his father launched Synner, an online guitar school designed to give aspiring players a structured Learning space.. Frustrated by the lack of organized free lessons online, Syn set out to create a comprehensive program with his father—an experienced studio musician—to teach guitarists of all levels while building a true community of players.

Synyster’s guitar playing is not only technically brilliant—it’s expressive, emotional, and unforgettable. His mix of classical, jazz, and metal influences gives his solos a unique voice, often making the guitar feel like it’s singing.

Beyond his shredding ability, Gates has shaped the sound of modern metal, inspiring aspiring guitarists and a generation of fans who deeply connect with him musically..

From Avenged Sevenfold’s iconic riffs to his work teaching the next generation, Synyster Gates has secured his place as a true guitar legend, proving that his passion for music extends far beyond the stage.
